Where shall we go?

It’s the summer. You have time off coming up. You want to do something fun and unusual with it. Now what? How do you choose a destination when faced with so many wonderful choices, both in New Zealand and overseas?

Who Will Be Going?

Are you planning a trip alone, with your spouse, your immediate family, or are you incorporating several generations? Your travel companions will have an enormous bearing on your destination. It is an excellent idea to have to most challenging members of your party well catered for – if you are travelling with small children, if they are happy and settled, chances are everyone will be. Similarly, if there is a member of your group with special needs (medical or practical), then look after them, so you can relax.

Who is Paying?

Many travel upsets start over money. Plan your trip well before you leave and budget it out carefully (and then add a percentage for emergencies). Make sure everyone who is contributing know what the costs are, and what are included in those costs, well before the departure date.

Is it Organised?

It’s often very tempting to pack a couple of changes of clothing and decide at the end of the driveway whether to turn right or left and just let an adventure happen. Much as this is great fun, the high holiday season is not to the time to indulge in this kind of travel (unless you are in a motorhome and can be self sufficient). Many camping grounds and hotels/motels are fully booked between late December and mid February – it pays to book ahead.

How Much of an Adventure Do You Want?

We all have our quirks. Know your limits. It’s wonderful to break out of the mould every now any again, but don’t plan to visit a destination that is likely to challenge you more than it cherishes you.

Final Thoughts

If you have a week, choose a destination where you have at least five days enjoying your holiday. If you have a couple of weeks or longer, it is easier to enjoy multiple locations or have time to get over a touch of jet lag.

Holidays are supposed to be fun and rejuvenating. Take a good clear look at your plans – how will you most likely feel at the end? If you are not entirely convinced, then it may be best to voice your concerns before you leave.

Now go and have some fun!
