Our favourite Nordic Noir dramas for a rainy night in

Beyond wonderfully efficient IKEA furniture and the cosy concept of hygge, Scandinavia knows a thing or two about how to pull off addictive crime dramas. Needless to say, we’re hooked on ‘Nordic Noir’ and with plenty of rainy nights still to come, we’ve put together a pick of our favourite shows.

The Bridge

When a dismembered body is found on the Oresund Bridge, a pair of detectives must work together to solve the crime. The twist? The bridge links the Swedish city of Malmo with the Danish capital of Copenhagen. Sassy police detective Saga Noren represents the Swedes, while her Danish counterpart Martin Rohde is also assigned to the case. Already hooked? Don’t worry, there are three seasons to get through, plus a fourth on the horizon.

The Tunnel

OK, so it’s not exactly a genuine Nordic Noir, but it was inspired by The Bridge and is a great option for those that aren’t keen on subtitles. It’s basically the British equivalent and sees a pair of detectives forced to work together when a French politician is found dead inside the Channel Tunnel. The case sparks a complex, cross country investigation fronted by the lovely Clémence Poésey and the endearing Stephen Dillane.

Borgen

From a minor politician to Denmark’s first female Prime Minister, Borgen follows the meteoric success and inevitable hurdles encountered by Birgitte Nyborg. This brilliant Danish political drama really hits the spot, with a captivating trio of lead actors and plenty of plot twists. If you liked Homeland you’ll love this dark, Nordic Noir version.

The Killing

Moody and character-driven, The Killing is another Danish gem. The story unfolds through the eyes of Detective Inspector Sarah Lund, with each series following a high-profile murder case. It’s these intricate, season-long storylines that really keep viewers gripped, not to mention the dark tone and unexpected plot twists. The Danish cinematography is also stunning which makes it an absolute pleasure to watch. Whatever you do don’t settle for the American version, it’s just not as good!

Modus

It’s Christmas in Sweden, and while the country may look like a winter wonderland psychologist and profiler Inger Johanne Vik finds herself and her autistic daughter drawn into a series of murder investigations. After a shocking Christmas Eve murder, Swedish detective Ingvar Nyman arrives on the scene. We then see both women work together to unravel a web of radical religion, human rights, red-hot political issues, social intolerance and unbridled love. There are some big themes flying around but at its core, Modus is a gripping Nordic Noir that’s bound to keep you watching.
