In the words of John Snow, “Winter is coming”. It’s still a battle with the elements, although instead of the summer sun to contend with it’s the harsh winds and drop in temperature. For some of us, this can result in dry lack-lustre hair, which may also feel windswept and unkept.

How should you keep your hair in tip top shape when the temperature is plummeting? These four simple steps should ensure your crowning glory stays looking its best.

Regular haircuts or trims – This is essential! To keep the ends of your hair clean and freshly cut to allow it to grow to its full potential. If you’re trying to grow your hair out slightly you may think you need to leave it to grow… not so! Keeping the ends trimmed will help it grow and keep its shape and style, this applies to the men as well!
Regular hair mask – If you can’t manage once a week then at least try for one a month! Once your hair has had a few days of being blasted in the wind and cold, it will be gasping for added moisture and nutrients.

Using a good quality shampoo and conditioner will help, but a hair mask is a more concentrated version of a conditioner. Some are left in for 10-15 minutes were as others can be left for hours or even overnight. Recommended brands include “Oliology – Nutrient Rich Coconut Oil Hair Mask” or “L’oreal Paris Hair Expertise – Ever Sleek Absolute Smooth Intense Moisturising Mask”. Both retailing between $25-$35.
Protect against heat – Even though the sun may not be shining as much as it did a few months ago, it’s still incredibly strong and will still be damaging your hair. If you use a hairdryer, curling iron or straightener, these can easily fry your hair. Use a heat protector spray or serum before you dry your hair like “John Frieda – Frizz-Ease Hair Serum Thermal Protection Formula”. Many post-wash products also contain a nourishing oil or sunscreen, to protect your precious strands.
Finishing touches – The final stage is a finishing spray, or other product. Don’t be scared to use hair-grade oils to stop fly-aways, or other products to add body and texture. “Bedhead Shine Spray- by Tigi” works fantastically at finishing off your look and it helps that it smells divine!
