After seeing the explosive videos of the gentleman being dragged off the United Flight 3411, we all seem to be asking. Why do airlines overbook?
US airlines bumped 40,000 passengers last year, not counting those who volunteered to give up their seats. Thankfully here in New Zealand, this is a less regular occurrence and cases of overbooking are usually dealt with before boarding.
