When the nest is empty, a companion animal can provide much needed company – but only if you can afford it. The fact is, pets need more than a loving owner; they also require access to professional care and a host of sundries you may not have thought about. With this in mind, we’ve put together tips to help you balance the books while enjoying the company of a companion animal.
The short and the long if it!
You may think you can manage your pet’s grooming at home – and in many cases this will be true. However, if this isn’t possible, you’ll need the services of a professional groomer, something which can seriously impact your budget. However, there are ways to minimise expenditure: Generally speaking, the coats of shorter haired animals can be kept in good condition through regular brushing and bathing at home, and a brush and pet shampoo may be all you need to purchase. Once you need to engage a professional groomer, however, you can expect to pay (depending on the size and condition of your pet’s coat) between $65 and $200 for a full groom.
Pet to vet
Not all animals are equal when it comes to requiring vet-care. In fact, some animals have a head start where health is concerned. The healthiest dog breeds, for example, have a long lifespan (Chihuahuas typically live for between 12-20 years) and are less likely to get sick. When it comes to cats, the genetic diversity of your average street savvy moggie means these hardy felines are less likely to require veterinary care than a pure-bred. Bengals, for example, are more likely to face cataract issues whilst a Persian is more likely to encounter breathing difficulties.
Adult versus youngster
As a senior, you may be thinking of an older pet rather than a younger one. After all, it’s nice to think you can provide a loving home for a pet pampered by an owner who can no longer care for it. An older dog will require less of you in terms of vigorous walks. However older pets come at a price as they are more likely to require veterinary attention as they age further. A younger pet comes with costs, too. Their playful antics can result in damage to your home and furnishings, and even to your skin! While ‘taming’ them via puppy school is always advisable, group courses at these establishments generally range from between $130-$250.
Correct caring
Just like their owners, companion animals are happier and healthier when they have a nutritious diet, maintain a healthy BMI (body mass index), and have appropriate exercise. The more you educate yourself on pet care and take steps to keep your pet healthy, the fewer costs you are likely to face regarding their upkeep.
DIY entertainment
Pet shops are filled with animal amusements and snacks but you can equally well make toys and treats for your pet, at home. From tasty tid-bits for Fido, to feather fascinators for your feline, there are big saving to be made when you go DIY.
Adopt don’t shop
The oft given advice ‘adopt don’t shop’ for a pet sounds helpful, but if you’re on a budget, the initial cost of a pet is likely to be the least of your expenses as an owner. That’s why ‘adopting’ is only wise if you can be confident the pet you are offering a home to is in good condition. If you adopt from the SPCA, you can be sure your potential pet has been checked for health and temperament, and it has been desexed, vaccinated, wormed, de-flead, and microchipped. The SPCA will also match its animals to owners based on the lifestyle of a potential owner and their needs. If you plan to adopt, do so wisely.
Insurance
We often love our pets more than we love ourselves! Which is why it’s so important we can afford their professional health care when it’s needed. Even if you are on a limited budget, it pays to consider pet insurance, and the SPCA can assist with advice. Some pet owners on a tight budget manage pet insurance by inviting friends and family to contribute to this cost via Christmas and birthday gifts, or in exchange for minding their own pets!
A limited budget doesn’t necessarily mean you need go without a pet. But for any potential pet owner, regardless of their circumstances, it’s essential to consider the costs of keeping a companion animal – before embarking on the journey!
