A Mum. We All Have One

A Mum. We all have one. Whether she is here or passed on, next door or across the world, your best friend or ‘complicated,’ Mother’s Day is coming, and she’ll be on your mind.

The commercial world will urge to buy her something, or make a grand gesture. If you are so inclined, go right ahead, but think about the lady in question – what is it she would like?

Your mother is your greatest fan (even when that love is disguised as harsh criticism at times). Love it or loathe it, there is an undeniable connection there.

If your Mum is no longer with you, she can still be honoured. Talk about her to your children, friends and grandchildren. Make the meal that reminds you of her most. Retrace her favourite walk. Listen to her favourite song.

If she is in visiting distance, visit. Take your time and listen. It is true that children are so preoccupied with growing up that they forget their parents are growing older at the same time, and facing their own issues.

If your relationship with your mother is complicated, you could have a turn at being the ‘grownup’ and extending the hand of friendship, or forgiveness. It’s hard to do, but the results for bravery can be humbling.

Send a beautiful card. Take the time to write more than a couple of sentences and be heartfelt and appreciative. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a few sincere words of love can nevertheless make someone’s day.
