About TUATARA, A Living Treasure

Meet TUATARA, ancient wonder, wildlife treasure … and SURVIVOR!

Blinking, she pulls her scaly body into the light. She’s as long as a finger, and with the row of spines on her back, she looks like a baby dragon.

Tuatara are survivors of an ancient era and sometimes referred to as living wonders — their closest relatives died out during the time of the dinosaurs 60 million years ago!

Written as a story following one little tuatara’s journey from hatchling to laying her own eggs, Katie Furze’s accessible text is accompanied on each page by interesting fact boxes and stunning illustrations by leading NZ wildlife illustrator, Ned Barraud.

The book includes fascinating historical background and more tuatara facts at the end of the book. TUATARA is the perfect resource for home, classroom and library, and would make a wonderful gift for nature lovers.

Katie Furze writes children’s fiction and non-fiction, including picture books, short stories, articles, plays, readers, and novels. This is her first non-fiction picture book with Scholastic. Katie has a master’s degree in creative writing and is fascinated by science and
nature. When she’s not reading or writing, she enjoys the outdoors, tramping, yoga, travelling and scuba diving. She lives in Auckland with her family.

Ned Barraud studied art in Otago and Illustration at Victoria University and has since authored and illustrated a number of children’s books and journals, including the ‘Explore and Discover’ series about different ecosystems in New Zealand. He loves to help introduce children to the natural world around them and encourages them to explore it. Ned lives in the misty hills of Karori, Wellington, with his wife and three children.
