About More Thinking About Life
What is happening to our world? Leading NZ author on people in society explores more timely issues in his latest book.
In More Thinking about Life, respected New Zealand author George Bryant explores a number of new issues following the success of his book, Life Is…, such as diminishing empathy, freedom of speech, our obsession with wanting more, the importance of the words we speak, our search for happiness, the decay of truth, how to cope when the going gets tough, living with cancer, the need for more wisdom and spirituality in politics, and confusion about the Treaty of Waitangi.
George also ponders the end of the world and whether there is any hope for the future of mankind.
Author Note
‘Two things inspired this book. First, the concerns of the many ordinary Kiwis I meet in coffee bars, clubs, churches, retirement villages and other places where ordinary Kiwis congregate. Second, my personal thinking and observations about the way the world is going, the result of diligent analyses of news items, newspaper and magazine articles, wide reading and involvement.
More Thinking About Life is yet another probe into key questions that worry many people, such as the disappearance of empathy, the effect of ongoing growth and depletion of resources, freedom of speech, the need for more wisdom in politics, the decay of truth, and even the possible collapse or civilisation itself.
People constantly tell me, ‘The world is in a mess.’ I try to clarify some of the issues.
While politicians concentrate on more housing, changing road speeds or banning patches, there are wider, more fundamental issues at play in society.
More Thinking About Life is really a sequel to my book Life Is…An Ordinary Kiwi Reflects, where I commented on, for example, the meaning of life, war and peace, pain and suffering, racism, big brother, climate change and other issues. The aim is to challenge leaders, politicians and, indeed, readers to think about the bigger picture, about what’s happening to human beings and their progress or lack of it, and, it is to be hoped, lead to positive reactions.
More Thinking About Life provides some guidelines for action and concludes with a list of learnings from the life of one very busy, widely experienced Kiwi. To anchor the issues in reality I have used some autobiographical material.’
