About Between the Harbour and the Mountain

Winner of the 2020 Ashton Wylie Charitable Trust Best Manuscript Award.

No matter how busy our lives, we often experience pivotal moments that cause us to pause and contemplate the mystery of daily living.

In this eloquently written collection of personal reflections on everyday life, Patricia Williams draws on her encounters with people, on the natural world around her, and on global events.

Gathered together here for the first time, these thematically organised musings range over topics such as nature, culture, the inner self, te ao Māori, faith, unity and our global crisis. These brief but often illuminating insights offer hope for a brighter future and invite the reader to explore a more thoughtful, contemplative way of living.

Patricia Williams was born in Aotearoa New Zealand and grew up in colonial Fiji. She taught in primary, secondary and adult education, and later set up a support scheme for young people in a psychopaedic hospital. She also became involved in teaching English to immigrants and refugees, supporting them to settle in their new country. Patricia lives in a small community of vowed women, all involved in helping professions. Aside from people, her great love is nature. She strongly believes that we humans need to re-establish those ancient bonds with the natural world if we are to survive as a species.

 

Terms and conditions

  1. You must be a GrownUps member and receive our newsletter to be eligible to win.
  2. Competition closes on the 18th January 2022, winners will be notified via email by Thursday 20th Jan 2021.
  3. As a competition winner, you must confirm you have received our email notifying you of the win within three days. If we have not heard from you in three days the prize will be redrawn, and your prize will be forfeit.
  4. Winners are drawn at random by the GrownUps administration team.
  5. GrownUps employees and family are not eligible to enter.
  6. By entering the giveaway, you approve for GrownUps to use your name on social media as winner of the competition.
  7. One entry per person.
  8. You must reside in New Zealand – the prize will only be posted within New Zealand.
  9. You must be over 50 years of age to enter, check your details are correct in your membership dashboard.
