About The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne
A beautifully written, life-affirming story of growing up and finding yourself – even when your past won’t let you go. For fans of David Nicholls, Patrick Gale and JoJo Moyes.
Eadie Browne, an odd child with eccentric parents, lives next door to a cemetery in a small Garden City. Bullied at school, she is protected by her two best friends, Celeste and Josh, and her many imaginary friends lying six feet under.
Arriving in Manchester as a student in the late 1980s, Eadie tastes freedom for the first time. In the vibrant gritty Northern city, with her newfound independence, friendships, and the community at her beloved Haçienda nightclub, Eadie is swept along. Until, one night, her past comes hurtling at her and she fears nothing will ever be the same again.
A decade later, as the new Millennium beckons, Eadie is 30, stuck in a job rut while her marriage is quietly crumbling. Travelling back from North to South on ‘the weirdest of days’ for a funeral, Eadie contemplates all that is now and all that was then in this moving love-letter to youth.
Freya North on the inspiration for The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne
“This was a very, very special novel to write. With Felix, my eldest, going off to Uni I found myself really thinking back to that period in my life. I realized that, for many years, I had simply overlooked remembering those times – and yet I’d forgotten nothing.”
“During the course of writing ‘Eadie’, I reunited with my old Manchester Uni pals when one returned from Australia where he now lives. It was an emotional and yet utterly grounding experience. We had changed and yet we hadn’t changed and all of us remembered with awe and affection the freedom and fear of leaving home for the first time.”
“Life bowls along; we climb and roll and skip and stumble as we go. It’s very cathartic to stand awhile, look back and take stock. I did precisely that while I wrote The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne.”
