Investment – Chris sees poorly structured portfolios and high fees as one of the banes of the industry. “You simply cannot justify stripping so much off the total return that the investor ends up with the equivalent of cash returns or worse. It is not complicated; you simply look for a structure that allows the most cost effective management possible. Every dollar wasted on fees is a dollar off your bottom line. Costs have to be justified. In the case of many managed funds, they simply aren’t.”

Personal insurance – Many people don’t like the idea of talking insurance. Taking a risk management approach to insuring clients, Chris ensures that every premium dollar is justified financially. “A dollar spent on insurance is a dollar that can’t be invested. Insurance plays a pivotal role in a financial plan, however I’ll always ensure it’s covering genuine risks. A tragic event shouldn’t be a lotto win. It should replace some or all of a genuine financial loss.”

Comprehensive planning – Chris believes that almost everyone should have a financial plan. And financial planners should be seen with the same regularity that one gets a warrant on a car. “The most important thing in dictating the long term success of a financial plan is that is regularly reviewed. Failing to do this will negate the very best plans. Why bother to plan in the first place? It’s like going grocery shopping, preparing an excellent and comprehensive list, only to aimlessly drive around hoping that somehow your car will get filled with groceries.”

“I see the relationships that I build with my clients as incredibly important. For a new client we’re starting out on a long process that will see us working together for many years to come.”
