Emergencies are never planned, and often happen at the most inopportune times. You may be far more likely to be out in your car than tucked up at home. A first aid kit is a must in a vehicle, but what else should you have packed away, in case of an emergency?

Modern cars often have storage spaces (under the seats or footrests, or around the spare tyre). Next time you give your car a thorough clean, stock it with useful items that could keep you safe and comfortable if the worst comes to the worst.

1. First Aid Kit – Never leave home without one. Make sure you have latex gloves, a hypothermia blanket, basic pain medication and antihistamines, sachets of electrolytes (to be mixed with water in case of dehydration), tweezers, eye wash, bandages, antiseptic and a thermometer.

2. Food and Water – Keep a 3l bottle of water stored in your car, in case you are confined to it for an extended period. It is also a good idea to have a small amount of ‘non-perishable emergency rations’ (baked beans – with an tin opener, muesli bars etc) that could keep you and your passengers sustained if you have to wait for assistance.

3. Safety equipment – a basic tool kit is a good idea – and a spare tyre in good condition. If you regularly travel in snowy or icy areas, keep chains in your car. Kitty litter, spread on tyres, can add extra grip in an emergency. A small shovel can come in handy if you become stuck. Always have a flashlight with spare batteries and a small radio. Keep a cell phone charger in your car so that you are able to maintain contact with loved ones and emergency services.

4. Comfort – A spare blanket or two is a good idea in case you are caught out and have to stay in your vehicle overnight.
