Keeping in touch with friends and family around the world

Staying-connected-to-the-world_CoverImageonly copyOne of the amazing things about technology today is its ability to connect us with the entire world at the click of a button, from the comfort of our very own homes.

Age Hacker Kaye loves this aspect of technology. “It’s easy to use and it’s everywhere. I love the fact that it brings the world to me and lets me go anywhere in the world.”

Her favourite piece of technology is her iPhone. “I can use Facetime with my friends and family. I just love it.”

Like Kaye, you may find Facetime meets your needs but another popular choice for making audio and video calls via the internet is Skype.

So what’s the difference? Skype can be used by any Windows and Android device while Facetime is a product exclusive to Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad and Macbook laptop. Skype is a great choice if you have a slower internet connection or need to save bandwidth.

Deciding on which video calling app to use will depend on your individual needs. If you are going to be making video calls with other Mac and IOS devices and are always connected to Wi-Fi, then FaceTime could provide a better experience. If you call friends and family who use a range of devices, or if you like to call when you’re away from a Wi-Fi connection, you might prefer Skype.

Cost-smart

Video calling can be a great way to get face-to-face with friends and family while at home, out and about, or if you want to talk to someone in another country.

One of the biggest advantages is that it’s cost effective. Video calling over the internet only incurs a call cost if you’re phoning an international landline. It will use some of your data allowance, but if you’re on an unlimited broadband plan you don’t need to worry about that.

In fact, if you’re someone who regularly phones overseas, using video calling on an unlimited broadband plan could be a good option for you – there’s just a fixed price for your internet each month and there’s no limit to the number of video calls you can make, or how long you can talk for.
