Boxing FitBoxing is not all about blood and violence. It is enjoying a huge renaissance as a sport and fitness phenomenon. Is it time to open your mind and glove up?

Boxing skills are very similar to that of dancing – you need to be agile, light on your feet and aware of your whole body. There is always room for improvement. It is great for your balance, fitness, strength and stress relief.

You don't need to get into the ring. Both men and women enjoy boxing fitness, without every having to stand toe to toe with an opponent. You can work with a trainer using focus pads on in a class environment on a heavy bag.

Try Something New

If you are interested in trying something new in your fitness regime – why not consider boxing? It is available to all age and fitness levels. As with any fitness programme, it is best to check with your health professional before you start. There are a number of personal trainers who offer boxing as part of their packages, and most gyms have boxing based classes on their schedule.

If you have any injuries or medical conditions, be open about them with your trainer. They should be able to modify the exercises to work around any issues.

Equipment

To begin boxing, you will need wraps for your hands. Sports shops and gyms sell them. Wraps are designed to protect your hands inside the gloves. Initially, you usually don't need to buy your own gloves.

You will need to wear comfortable workout clothing and shoes. After that, you can get started. Be prepared to feel out of your depth if you haven't boxed before. You will be learning new skills, terminology and movements. Remember to cast your mind back – were you great at tennis the first time you picked up a racquet? Were you offered a place on the PGA after your first game of golf? Probably not, so give it time.

Women are often nervous the first time they try boxing. They are not generally used to hitting or kicking and need to give themselves permission to do so. Some women often feel quite emotional, or even cry when they start. Boxing can be great therapy if you are holding emotions in!
