No.8 Films has produced a feature length adventure drama movie called ‘3 Mile Limit’ set in 1965.

It’s a true story of one man’s struggle to bring rock music to a nation, an iconic New Zealand story with a universal ‘David and Goliath’ theme.

The youth will find it incredible this actually happened and existed as part of New Zealand society in the 1960’s. It’s a titanic struggle for freedom and ‘the choice to choose’.

I was too young to remember when it all started but I do remember in the 70’s when they were consider the rebels on the airwaves and it all sound so exciting that they had too broadcast out at sea

I grew up in Taranaki and we couldn’t receive Radio Hauraki. When we drove up to Auckland, we were all excited and charged by their great music selection. Exciting times.

I was living in the UK then and remember the UK Pirate Radio stations, Radio Caroline and Radio London, a very exciting time.

Very early teens, I remember lying in bed at night listening to my little radio, a bit scratchy, but the best music. I was meant to be sleeping though I’m sure my parents knew I was listening and yes I was listening when the order came to abandon ship.

I was living in Hamilton then and was an avid listener then one night January 1968 I was listening when the music stopped and the announcer told us the crew were abandoning ship as they were sinking. What an awful blow at that time.

I was 21yrs old then, and have always been a supporter of the Kiwi battler against the big boys, still am, nowadays it’s the big Corporates.
Radio Hauraki offered great music and entertaining DJ’s Loved Blackie.
I can remember they had one advertising sponsor which was Avis Rental Cars, and it was played often!

I used to listen to the stories on the radio in the 60’s with a small round blue radio as I was born then. Also going to tauranga camping & meeting slim dusty at his caravan, rollerskating & kayaking there as well & having jellyfish thrown at us as we pulled our boats along the beach. what fun

I remember a holiday at the Crystal Hot Springs in Matamata when Radio Hauraki came to entertain. They played “the two of us” for my parents at the time too . I remember it well.

1480 top of the dial was my station of choice on the cowshed radio until the dear old Tiri came to grief. I’m certain the “girls” missed Blackie and the rest of the pirates as much as I did!

I was only 6 at the time but I remember my father in law talking about it because he was the captain on the tiri for a time but not sure when.

I too remember the 60’s so it was great when recently I was in Whakatane, then went along to attend a rotary meeting and Chris Prouse spoke and showed a video of the history of their epic adventures. A really great presentation !!

I’m afraid I’m too young to remember Hauraki in the 60’s, but do know them from the 70’s. Incredible to see the lengths that people/authority went to, to try and keep the status quo. The film looks excellent. Would love to see it.

Being born in 1961 I didn’t really understand the momentous changes going on around me at the time during the 60’s, but was certainly grateful in the 70’s when the pirates paved the way for private radio stations like Radio Avon in Christchurch.

I was born in 1961 and remember the 1960’s as being carefree and there were no money worries. We played lots of games but no playstations. Life was great.

How can we ever forget the “1480, Top of the dial” days? I remember being at the Basin assisting the Tiri to get out when the bridge was lowered. We made a special trip up to Auckland from Hamilton for the night… almost lost my job over it! Listened to Radio Hauraki all the time back then. Was devastated when the Tiri ended up on the rocks and thought we would never hear it again, but they came back. After moving away from the North in 1970, never got to listen to them again.

I was a Hauraki fan from the outset. I raced home from my first job to tune my transistor radio for their first broadcast. I was all of 16. I headed into the Viaduct Basin to join the crowds when they tried to block the Tiri from leaving port. I recall the shouts of the crowd as we managed to tilt the boat enough to get under the drawbridge and the dismay when the police boarded the boat immediately after. Radio Hauraki remained my “station” of choice for years after that. I still get goosebumps when I hear the song “Born Free”.

Remember those 1480 days well. We sold the 1480 bumper stickers in the gas station at the New Plymouth Ford dealership where I worked. We also visited the Hauraki studios in Auckland, met with some of the “Good Guys” and “Good guy” Ian Magan gave us a tour of the ship Tiri 1 while it was in dock for some work to be done on her. Remember looking at the 4 diesel engines that powered her. Have some photos of Ian and my wife and 5 year old son standing on the deck. Those were the days !

Remember these days well, 14-80 top of your dial, a real scratchy sound received with long wired antennas onan old wooden 1930’s style radio, in my old batch at Waitara, Nth Taranaki, great music, great DJ’s – dad actually took me for a visit to a studio in Auckland where stuff was being recorded to transmit from the Turi before it sunk; memories from when we were all so young and flexible!

Was still in nappies when this was happening but moved to Auckland in the seventies and can remember Blackie doing the morning shows on Hauraki

The 60s were when I was born, I remember carefree days as a kid, no worries in the world, just what to play with next and what to do. Wouldn’t it be nice to go back to those times, knowing what we do today 🙂
