New Zealanders love the sun much more than their skin does.
Many of us have spent years in the great outdoors and have tell-tale signs of sun damage to show for it – scaly, rough, wrinkled and dry skin and even more worryingly, carcinomas which, left unchecked, can become melanoma. Often, these affect the back of hands, ears or foreheads.
In fact, New Zealand has the highest rate of melanoma in the world.
So, it’s very welcome news that a simple nutrient – Vitamin B3 as nicotinamide in a therapeutic dose – can help prevent skin damage by the sun. Incredibly, the vitamin (in its nicotinamide form) was proven to reduce recurring carcinomas (non-melanoma skin cancers) by 23% in just one year.
The ONTRAC study, conducted in Sydney and published in 2015, had 386 participants with an average age of 66. They had had at least two non-melanoma skin cancers in the previous five years. Those in the experimental group were given 1000mg of nicotinamide daily. Skin checks were conducted by dermatologists.
Nicotinamide also shows promise for a range of other skin conditions – ageing skin, acne, rosacea, autoimmune blistering disorders and atopic dermatitis.
Blackmores reviews scientific evidence when formulating its product range. The range features high dose nicotinamide.
