Cancer Society provides crucial help for people in the dark moments of life.

People like Vanesse Geel, whose husband Geoff was diagnosed with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, an incurable cancer.

‘Together every day, every step of the way’

This is the mantra Geoff and Vanesse chose to live by throughout Geoff’s cancer journey – and it’s Cancer Society’s guiding principle too.

No one is more active in local communities up and down the country, helping and supporting cancer patients like Geoff during what can be a lonely and isolating time.

“People don’t like to talk about cancer….they struggle to understand your needs and emotions,” says Vanesse. “Cancer Society was amazing….having cancer somehow separates you from everyone else. But no one needs to face cancer on their own.”

Geoff passed away in the early hours of 23rd August 2013 with Vanesse and the family at his side. They all showed tremendous courage to the end, “We lived every moment together, shed tears together and walked the journey to the end – together.”

Vanesse is still showing this courage two years later.

“Geoff’s second anniversary is coming up, we wouldn’t have survived this time if it wasn’t for the support of the Cancer Society community. There’s a sense of belonging now. This Daffodil Day, I’ll be wearing my daffodil for Geoff. I never chose this journey. But I’m incredibly grateful for the gifts it has given us.”
