How much do you know about the Alexander Technique?

It has been around for more than 100 years. Alexander came from Tasmania and discovered that the alignment of the body had a direct affect on our health.

Many people have asked me over the years about how the Alexander technique differs from Chiropractics or physiotherapy. Well, here is the answer. Those treatments address the part of the body that is in pain or has an injury. The practitioner helps to relieve the pain and by one method or another. However, the client then goes away again only to repeat the same actions that landed him/her at the physio or chiro in the first place. Here is where the Alexander technique steps in. The technique is an education rather than a treatment. It enlightens the client to what they are doing wrong with their body and assists them to correct the wrong doing. Hence, The Alexander technique addresses the root of the problem instead of the symptom. I know I have probably said this before but it is worth repeating. The technique addresses the cause of the back ache, the frequent headaches and the stiff shoulders and neck.

It is an education that will last you the rest of your life. Forever more you will know how to stand, sit, walk, watch TV more comfortably, walk on the beach front with no back pain. Go to those gym classes and gain real benefit from the exercises.

It is an opportunity to look inwards, to reflect on what we are doing and how we are being with ourselves and others.

So to recap, it is not a treatment but an education. Although all my clients will testify that the lessons have an element of lying down and being lengthened which is so relaxing and wonderful, they consider that to be a treatment, but in truth it is educating the body.

This is not to say that all those other wonderful treatments don’t have a place. They do and thank goodness for them. However, if you would like to change the outcome you will have to address what is causing you the problem in the first place. So many folk I treat, do not join the dots, they often don’t realise that the car they are driving can be causing their lower back ache, or headaches. Or the way the are sitting at their desk at work, may well be contributing their malaise.

Embark on this journey with your Alexander technique teacher, it will be one of great self discovery and enlightenment. They can shed light on all aspects of your life as well as freeing up your body movement.
