About LOOK! said the Little Girl

A man and a little girl share their unique way of seeing and hearing the world around them.

“Look,” said the little girl, “a ladybird!”
“A ladybird!” said the old man. “What does she look like?”
“Like a tiny turtle in fancy dress – a red polka-dot coat that’s hiding a secret.”
“Wings?” whispered the old man.
“Yes, wings,” whispered the little girl.
“That is a very good secret.”

As they walk, a young girl describes the things she sees to an elderly, visually impaired man, who turns the tables when he describes to the child what it is that he hears.

Tania Norfolk’s evocative, imaginative language makes this story sing, and demonstrates to children how to be creative in their own descriptions. This beautifully told story contains themes of friendship, self-expression and appreciating others’ differences – and the joy that can be gained from sharing, whether it be experiences … or strawberries.

Aleksandra Szmidt’s quirky, imaginative illustrations are full of exquisite textures and colours.

The written word has long been a part of Tania Norfolk’s professional life, working in research and education, but it’s through creative writing that she finds the joy of sharing how she sees the world. Tania’s first picture book, Grasshopper’s Week, was published in 2014. LOOK! said the Little Girl is her first picture book with Scholastic. Tania lives in Nelson- Whakatū with her husband and two boys.

Aleksandra Szmidt is an award-winning children’s book illustrator who grew up in Poland before journeying to New Zealand.
