Neurophysics – My Story

Like many people, I had become accustomed to living with regular physical pain – the remnants of sports injuries and childbirth had left me with a dicky shoulder, hip and back. I could do most things, but there were days when the pain really did limit me, which has a huge impact on my mood and ultimately, my life.

Years of surgery, cortisone, osteopathy, and physiotherapy had taught me that pain relief was possible, but it took a while to feel the benefits, and they weren’t necessarily long lasting. It seemed that there was often at least one step back for every two steps forward.

I was offered the opportunity to work with a Neurotricionist at the newly opened Neurophysics Functional Movement Centre in Grey Lynn, Auckland. I had to commit to a couple of hours per day, for four consecutive days initially. After that, there is a programme of maintenance which can be done at home, or at the clinic. You see your therapist regularly as you complete each programme.

Other than knowing it was an exercise based therapy, I was completely in the dark about what to expect.

Neurophysics is the branch of biophysics that deals with the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. If you imagine yourself and your brain as an electrical circuit, you will learn how to ‘re-wire’ broken or damaged parts of the circuit, until it works as efficiently as possible. It is a scientifically proven, natural health system which has been getting phenomenal results for a wide range of conditions for the past 25 years overseas. The results are fast and have a vast variety of applications.

Under focused guidance, the therapists teach you to re-programme your own neural pathways, and ones which are more efficient, improve function and do not cause pain. The therapy is catered to your own condition and abilities and the results are fast and dramatic.

At the end of my first session of (incredibly gentle) therapy, I realised I was able to get up from the floor, virtually without pain. It was something of a shock. I cannot remember the last time that happened. I went home, rather bemused – apparently this ‘head shaking’ is entirely normal, according to my therapist – people can usually not believe the results that are achieved so fast.

Since I completed the programme and have been working independently, I have noticed:

  • My sleep has improved
  • I rarely experience pain, but when I do, I am able to settle it swiftly, without medication or equipment
  • I feel noticeably calmer within myself
  • My body feels mobile, flexible and reliable
  • I able able to prevent migraines developing

The clinic has the first Altitude Training Room in New Zealand, outfitted with state of the art equipment. Anywhere else, you would have to use a mask to replicate the conditions at altitude. Training in higher altitude conditions makes your body more efficient at using oxygen and fuel, which improves performance, no matter what your fitness level. It also has a positive effect on insomnia, anaemia, rehabilitation after cardiac surgery, weight loss, hormone levels and skin rejuvenation.

Neurophysics has gained attention for helping high dependency patients, those with spinal cord injuries, stroke, Parkinsons and Motor Neurone Syndrome symptoms, along with high performance athletes seeking to maximise their performance. However, in the 25 years the programme has been operating in Australia, thousands of people have been freed from chronic pain and conditions as well.

Based on my experience, I am a firm believer in the benefits of Neurophysics. I love that the therapy has given me the tools to take control of my own health and wellbeing. For more information click here.
