One of New Zealand’s most scenic train journeys is the Coastal Pacific from Christchurch to Kaikoura.
Operated by Kiwi Rail the carriages are near new and were built in New Zealand. The expansive glass windows allow for good viewing from your seat.
A monitor in each carriage highlights the journey and audio clips are played through headsets supplied for each passenger. The scenic journey takes just under three hours. I lost count of the number of tunnels that we went through as we headed north.
An outside viewing carriage allows keen photographers to capture the rural and coastal scenery.
An onboard cafe sells light meals, snacks and drinks.
The train stops at the Kaikoura Whale Way Station, the departure point for the famous Kaikoura whale watch boat trips. The train then continues on to Blenheim and Picton before returning in the afternoon to Christchurch.
Tip: If you intend going to the open viewing carriage bring a warm jacket and woollen hat as temperatures outside can be very cold, even in the middle of summer.
