Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional – it may be a cliché, but there is place for silliness and good fun at any age. We all know a jolly good laugh is good for our stomach, muscles, our mood, our soul and our health.
Next time you have friends over, why not try adding a touch of silliness and fun? It needn’t cost a lot, but can add a lot to even an impromptu social gathering.
Table talkers
It is alarmingly easy to get together with a group of people and end up talking about the same issues or people. When did you last learn something new about friends or family? Table talkers; small cards with interesting questions and trivia, can stimulate all kinds of memories, lively debate or topics for debate. They are available at bookstores and gift shops – try shuffling the deck and tucking a couple of cards into folded napkins. As guests sit down there will be a guaranteed flow of conversation as they share what’s on the cards.
Fun accessories
It’s fun to be surprised. The rise of $2 shops have been excellent for parties – buy a few small foldable treat boxes and fill them with sweets as a table decoration, or buy enough funny accessories for each guest (tiaras, moustaches, oversized glasses or wigs) and wrap them up as lucky dips. It’s an excellent icebreaker!
Glass identification
“Was this my glass?” can be the most asked question at a dinner party. Fix the problem with a festive solution – tie different coloured helium balloons to the stem of wine glasses, or streamers, or glass gems.
Name tags
Of course you know your friend’s names, but maybe you could start a trip down memory lane by putting their nickname on a name tag, or a skill they are famous for – there’s often nothing more fun than an evening of “Remember when…”
Simple pleasures
Next time you have a picnic, pack a pad of coloured paper and make paper planes. It is quick, easy and great fun for all ages.
Life can be so serious sometimes – never underestimate the benefit of injecting a bit of spontaneous fun!

Loved you ideas. One of the most fun dinner parties I ever had was to wrap all the cutlery up for each course separately (disguised of course) then put them all in a basket plus a few extras and it was a lucky dip as to what parcel you chose as to what tools you got to eat with. e.g soup with a knife and fork or chop sticks. The evening went really well. Tisa
