There is a widespread, but little-known epidemic of omega-3 deficiency impacting health across the world. Evidently the overconsumption of omega-6 in the typical Western diet has left us chronically lacking omega-3s, and more susceptible to conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome.
According to the Heart Foundation, approximately one in two New Zealanders are obese or overweight and cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel disease) is still the leading cause of death in New Zealand, accounting for 40% of deaths annually.
Diabetes is said to be an epidemic in our Country, with over 208,000 New Zealanders have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Our diet correlates to both these conditions and Kiwi’s need to be concerned about what they are really eating.
