Or even just walk!
The good news is, getting around the block a few times a week – or for the more adventurous, further and faster – can do wonders to help fight bugs this winter.
Some theories on why this might work include – exercise helping flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways; exercise causing a rise in body temperature that works against infection; exercise causing better circulation of white blood cells and antibodies; and, exercise reducing stress, a known cause of illness.
Most people will agree, exercise makes you feel better, even if it seems difficult at first. In time, and particularly if you work on your fitness, exercise feels great. And, it certainly improves your zest for life.
The key is to work within your ability but push yourself a bit. Can you still talk while you walk? That’s a good test. If you’re completely breathless and gasping, slow down a bit. Build your pace slowly and safely because with exercise, you can indeed do “too much of a good thing”.
In addition to exercising your way through lurgy season, check your diet.
Are you eating enough fresh vegetables and fruits, bright colours, Vitamin C containing citrus fruits? How about zinc foods like proteins, beans and nuts? Is the majority of your diet fresh rather than processed?
You may also want to consider an immunity boosting supplement and, to support healthy muscles and muscle recovery, a good magnesium supplement.
