Love is good and for those of us lucky enough to find it, cherishing it becomes a life’s work. Once you retire, you have more time than every to spend with your significant other. Ideally this extra time is a blessing – after 30-40-50 years of marriage or partnership how do you keep that spark alive and make the most of the life you have built together? We’d love your comments, but here are a few romantic thoughts to start with:
Renew your vows
This gesture isn’t for everyone, and it’s a bold move that can come with a decent price tag. It’s a wonderful gesture to mark a significant anniversary and include those who weren’t there the first time around – your children for example! If you’ve ever wished to do it all again, then do. Whether it’s after 5 years or 50 years of togetherness, a service, ceremony, or just a gathering of loved ones is a great way to remember the reasons why you’re together and why you committed in the first place. Go big or go small, there are no boundaries on this one, and it’s a moment many couples love to share with their own children and family now they are grown up themselves.
For a small touch of romance without the planning and expense, dig out your vows and quote passages of them to your spouse at unusual times.
Re-create your first date
Reminiscing about your first date with your love can be the perfect romance builder, however re-creating it can be an even bigger one. Think back to where you went, what you did and how you felt. Depending where you are currently based in the world this could end up being quite the adventure if you allow it to be. Plan it together or create a special birthday or anniversary surprise for your partner. This is the perfect way to get nostalgic and re-create the moment you fell for each other.
Weekend break away
Sometimes time can pass us by and before you know it you realise it’s been weeks, months perhaps even years since you both went away together. Saving and spending the money on a weekend away is the perfect way to unwind, spend some time away from your normal routine at home and create some new memories together. Think of somewhere you’ve both never been before and always wanted to, or re-visit that special place that means a lot to you.
Relationships take work and commitment, which is well worth the effort. By allocating time together and doing things outside the box, you will put some passion back into your relationship and keep the love you have for each other alive.
We’d appreciate your comments – what makes love last for you?
