Omega-3 has shot to stardom in the supplement world in recent years largely due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
Research is continuing into the many ways it is thought Omega-3 can help us, but predominantly, they are recommended to aid brain and eye function, depression and mobility. They are also said to be helpful in combatting arthritis and heart disease, and maybe even cancer.
So what’s all the fuss about and what exactly are they?
Technically, Omega-3 refers to a group of three polyunsaturated fats that are vital for human health that our bodies can’t synthesise or make on their own. We need to get them from fish, nuts, eggs, seeds or oils like flaxseed, sunflower and hemp oils.
The three fats are ALA (found in plant oils), EPA, and DHA (often found in marine oils).
Eye specialists also recommend the consumption of Omega-3’s to maintain good eye health and for those suffering from specific conditions like dry or red eyes. Both brains and eyes are rich in DHA and Omega-3’s are often recommended to help support good eye function and maintain a good fluid balance in the eye.
Did you know that the human brain is 60% fat? The fat we eat influences its composition. Research indicates Omega-3’s can help to reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
So all in all, not a bad supplement for GrownUps to keep in the cupboard!
