About Late Life Adventures in London and Beyond

A fascinating travel memoir from a New Zealander in her early 60s enjoying life in London and beyond

At sixty years of age and with wanderlust still coursing through her veins, Annemarie Rawson uproots her husband, Steve, once again. This time, they move to London, willing to work but eager to see and do as much as they can.

Will their age restrict any employment? Will they enjoy soaking up British and European life and wonder at the sights and history? Or will this adventure prove too much and send them speeding back to their native New Zealand?

Including photos of their adventures, highlights include:

  • Loving a new and exciting life in Teddington, southwest London, and exploring the locale – Teddington Lock, Twickenham, Richmond, Bushy Park & Kingston-Upon-Thames and visiting Hampton Court Palace, Ham House and the stunning Petersham Nurseries.
  • Finding work options in their 60s that enabled them to tour and explore as well as earn some money.
  • Enjoying London city history and fabulous museums – the V&A, British Museum, National Picture Gallery, Sky Garden, Osterley House, John Sloane Museum, Kew Gardens, Royal Academy, Tower of London, The Garden Museum and more. Everything cultural was on their doorstep as well as stunning parks and gardens.
  • UK highlights of stately homes and castles in Northamptonshire and beyond, Chartwell (Churchill’s home in Kent), finding family roots in Glasgow, a quaint Cotswolds tour, London at Christmastime, spending Christmas in Cornwall.
  • France – a week in Pezenas and surrounds and staying with old friends in The Tarn. A magical tour of the Andalucía region of Spain with NZ friends.
  • A fascinating and fun time in beautiful, historic Malta.

‘Annemarie writes just as she speaks – with wit, warmth, and good humour. Her books are funny and engaging because she is so interested (she might say nosy) in everything about her. She makes friends very easily, and it’s this curiosity and lust for life that immerses us in her stories.’ – Louise Ward, Wardini Books

Previous books:

MY FRENCH PLATTER – In their mid-50s, Annemarie & Steve leave a perfectly good life in New Zealand in search of an adventure and dream life, having naively accepted roles as Estate Managers in the stunning countryside of the southwest of France. Disaster strikes. But the people, the food, the wine and the French way of life have inveigled their way into their hearts. How do they deal with the disaster?

MY FRENCH PLATTER REPLENISHED – a fresh start at the magnificent Combe de Merigot changes Annemarie and Steve’s life completely. A beautiful gite to live in and a classic, French interior-designed home to work in brings joy, fun, and the life they thought they would get upon arriving in France.

About the author:

Annemarie Rawson is a New Zealander who collects new ‘best friends’ wherever she goes. In her 50s, she and her husband, Steve, packed up the house, rented it out, kissed her family and friends goodbye and moved 12,000 km to Southwest France to work as estate managers for several private families — swapping corporate, city life for animal husbandry and the French countryside. She recorded their French lives in two books – My French Platter and My French Platter Replenished.

Annemarie loves people, animals, travelling, interior design and creating delicious food to welcome people into her home and at her table.

After a stint back in New Zealand, Annemarie decided (at 60) it was time for another adventure and did the same thing, packing up the house but this time moving to London. Just on three years later, they have explored more of London than some Londoners. They have bounced around the UK and Europe, capturing it all in photos and blogs, combining these into her latest book, Late Life Adventures in London and Beyond, the first in her travel series. Annemarie and her husband currently live in Havelock North.
