About Īhaka and the Unexpected Visitor

An original, new story featuring Tāwhirimātea, god of wind and storms, winner of the 2021 Joy Cowley Award.

On answering a knock at the door, young Īhaka is surprised to see Tāwhirimātea swirl in. The wind god is looking for a little raincloud that has gone missing. He needs it for an imminent rainstorm and pleads with Īhaka to help him search. So off they go to check in with the gods Tangaroa, Tāne and Rūaumoko, none of whom have seen the little cloud. Dejected, they return to Īhaka’s house … and find that Īhaka’s mum has a pretty good idea where to look.

Children will love following Īhaka and Tāwhirimātea on their adventure, and will relish the twist in the ending. Kirsty Wadworth’s endearing story is interspersed naturally with a few Māori words and phrases that kids will soon pick up, and characters are brought to life by the talented Zak Waipara.

About the Author & Illustrator

Kirsty Wadsworth was born in Slough in the United Kingdom and moved with her parents to New Zealand when she was 18 months old. Kirsty was home-schooled from the age of 10, and later home-schooled her younger siblings. She’s been a primary school teacher for 7 years now and lives in Levin with her husband, Manu, and son, Matthew.

Kirsty loves writing stories, and especially enjoys writing for children. In her spare time, when she’s not teaching or writing, Kirsty helps out at her local theatre and explores the library and second-hand bookshops, looking for her next great read.

Zak Waipara. A former NZ Herald graphic artist and HOD of Animation at Animation College, Zak Waipara (Rongowhakaata, Ngati Porou, Ngati Ruapani, Ngati Kahungunu) is now Digital Media lecturer at AUT. He has worked as a designer for Māori Television’s children’s show Miharo, illustrated comics and a range of books, and created animated music videos.

He is the illustrator of Horeta and the Waka and The Stolen Stars of Matariki (Scholastic NZ). Born in Milton, in the South Island, Zak now lives in Auckland.
