Winner of the 2023 Storylines Joy Cowley Award

A new baby has arrived home and family dogs, Max and Spike, are not happy…

Max and Spike are troubled. Their owners have brought home a new baby and all the attention is on this ‘squeakling’. Studying it closely, they note that it likes to shake things, make big noises and it smells bad. Plan A is to do the same. FAIL! Plan B is to make themselves helpful so they bring in the washing (dragging it through the dirt), clean the dishes (lick them) and water the pot plants (by weeing on them!). Surprisingly, that doesn’t work either. So they decide to leave home…

Kristin Kelly has written a brilliantly funny story from the dogs’ point-of-view, and this is a chance for children to examine their own feelings and emotions when a new baby joins the family. Colourful, quirky illustrations from Ronja Schipper capture beautifully the pathos and humour.

The Storylines Joy Cowley Award was established in 2002 when Storylines contacted Scholastic New Zealand, one of Joy’s publishers, asking them to join with Storylines in creating an award that would recognise the exceptional contribution Joy Cowley has made to children’s literature and literacy in New Zealand and internationally. The aim of the award is to foster the publication of excellent picture books by writers permanently resident in New Zealand.

 

 

Terms and conditions

    1. You must be a GrownUps member and receive our newsletter to be eligible to win.
    2. Competition closes on the 21st August 2024, winners will be notified via email by 22nd August 2024.
    3. It is your responsibility to ensure you correctly enter a New Zealand postal address where the prize can be sent. GrownUps will not take responsibility for prizes sent to incorrect addresses.
    4. Winners are drawn at random by the GrownUps administration team.
    5. GrownUps employees and family are not eligible to enter.
    6. By entering the giveaway, you approve for GrownUps to use your name on social media as winner of the competition.
    7. One entry per household.
    8. Prize in non transferrable.
    9. You must reside in New Zealand – the prize can only be redeemed within New Zealand.
