About The Democracy Game

Set in New Zealand’s near future, New Zealand author Riley Chance examines concerns about forces shaping our society in this page-turning thriller

Populist political parties are increasing their influence across the world. It couldn’t happen in New Zealand, could it?

Journalist Grace Marks is investigating two seemingly unrelated stories – New Zealand’s alt- right and the emergence of a new organisation, ProtectNZ. When a ‘dead man’s hand’ is nailed to her front door with a knife, she realises her investigations are ruffling feathers.

Former US agent Marla Simmons, hiding in New Zealand after a mission went sour, decides Grace needs help. She discovers that finding out who is orchestrating the attacks won’t be straightforward.

ProtectNZ, campaigning under the populist slogan “Protecting the lives of ordinary New Zealanders”, is gaining popularity. Using lessons from overseas, Grace is concerned ProtectNZ is treating democracy as a game, a game they’re playing well. When their charismatic leader is shot in a politically motivated attack, interest in ProtectNZ surges.

The stories collide as Grace and Marla’s investigations deepen. When a body is found, the question is not only who did it, but who was the victim, and why?

As the polls reflect ProtectNZ’s growing popularity, Grace and Marla race to expose those pulling the strings so the voting public knows the truth.

‘Riley Chance is producing high-quality local thrillers with a strong political thread, touching on significant issues facing New Zealand society in the modern world.’ Editor Geoff Walker

‘Investigative journalist Grace Marks and former US agent Marla Simmons join forces in The Democracy Game, a thought-provoking political thriller with just the right blend of action, unforgettable characters, and a riveting plot that examines a multitude of societal issues.’ NZ Booklovers

Author Note:

‘When the misguided (at best) Americans invaded The Capitol, there was a sentiment expressed that could be summed up by the phrase, “It couldn’t happen in New Zealand”. A year later, our own parliament was besieged and, in scenes reminiscent of The Capitol riot, the police forcibly removed the protestors.

Our experience was part of an increased appeal of populist political movements. I started researching ‘populism’ and the strategies these political parties employed. What I found seemed simple, but if they played the game well enough and were backed with sufficient money, it created an environment that could make Trump president or nudge Brexit over the line.

This made me think – what would it look like if it did happen in New Zealand? If The Democracy Game was played here?’

About the author:

Having juggled work, family and life for the last two decades, Riley Chance is a seasoned but unenthusiastic member of the precarious workforce. A university course focused on how citizens can change society reignited Riley’s interest in the forces shaping our future society. This, and a passion for writing, has resulted in a series of entertaining novels set in New Zealand’s near future that challenge readers to look at the world around them.
