About Guardians
A thrilling historical novel that opens on the eve of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and follows Robert (Ropata) Smith’s troubled journey through the following decades, as he weaves a path of truths and non-truths, revenge and justice, while seeking peace with his guardians.
In part one of this three part novel, Robert’s story starts in a small North Island hydro village in October 1962 after he is confronted with a spiritual world of local guardians (kaitiaki) through a white fantail.
At the same time, 11-year-old Robert is surrounded and nurtured by colourful adult characters of all ethnicities and nationalities, with many of them related to an incident that happened in WW2. His suspenseful connection with the white fantail adds to the tension in the village as the missile crisis deadline looms.
In part two and three of this fast-paced novel, we follow Robert and his childhood friends as adults, as he journeys to his spiritual destiny through a dangerous path of murderous revenge connected to his family’s past.
These parts of the book, covering 1970 to 1998, are set in Dunedin, Belfast, London, Northern England, Sydney and Auckland, before reaching a violent climax back in the original, now near-deserted, village where his guardians govern the window to the world of souls.
