About Behind You, Dad

A moving book of conversations between a father and his son that will resonate with families everywhere

Maxwell wanted his two-year-old son to have a better life. But without hope in his native country in Africa, he set out to explore the world in search of greener pastures. That exploration led the family to emigrate to New Zealand.

The son is now twenty, but one afternoon the father and son find themselves in deep conversation when the son asks to hear the story of how they came to be in this new land.

In Behind You, Dad, Maxwell unpacks his ‘bindle sack’ of memories, revealing hard-won true-life experience and knowledge about living as an immigrant and practical wisdom passed on from father to son about what it takes to get ahead—no matter what circumstances come our way.

Author Note:

‘The inspiration to write the book was a desire to build relationships between parents and their children, to share my experiences as a father and as an immigrant while encouraging the reader to introspect, reflect on their experiences, and possibly gain new insights.

The book is based on conversations that I had with my son, which I believe can benefit a wider audience regardless of location, situation, or status. I hope it resonates, inspires, and sparks meaningful conversations.’

About the Author:

Maxwell Mkoki was born in Zimbabwe and moved to New Zealand in 2005 as an Indentured worker. Ever since he landed, Howick and Pakuranga have been his home.

He has written a couple of short e-books on Amazon in the past. He is currently a full-time student at Auckland University studying Global Studies, a trans-disciplinary study focusing on solving our globalized world issues.

He is also a Philosophy student at the New Zealand branch of the School of Philosophy and likes reading about philosophical subjects.

Behind You, Dad is a relationship book about a father and son who discuss life’s challenges in new environments.

    2. Competition closes on the 21st August 2024, winners will be notified via email by 22nd August 2024.

    4. Winners are drawn at random by the GrownUps administration team.
    5. GrownUps employees and family are not eligible to enter.
    6. By entering the giveaway, you approve for GrownUps to use your name on social media as winner of the competition.

    8. Prize in non transferrable.
    9. You must reside in New Zealand – the prize can only be redeemed within New Zealand.
