I love to travel because it opens my eyes, gladdens my heart, sharpens my mind, tires my feet, lightens my wallet and brightens my life. Anonymous
Holidays are a great opportunity for some you-time, but that should never be to the detriment of the people and the location you are visiting. Choose how you spend your time and money wisely overseas and create a win-win for both hosts and travellers.
Spend locally where you can
Many popular holiday destinations rely heavily on the tourist dollar, yet not all of them enjoy as honourable a system of government as we enjoy. Where possible, buy from local vendors and ensure your tourist dollars reach the right people.
Ask for advice from your travel agent or tour operator to ensure there are no potential pitfalls to be aware of. Research whether bartering is encouraged, or seen as offensive and remember not to ‘over barter,’ when it comes to the difference of a few cents. The difference may mean a lot more to a local vendor’s budget than to yours.
Where there is civil unrest or potential danger, a recognised brand, in terms of accommodation or travel may still be your safest bet.
Wildlife
Observing and interacting with wildlife is often a drawcard when travelling. This can raise many issues around your own and the animals’ safety. Think honestly about the issues and then decide – do you feel comfortable betting on a horse race, watching a bullfight or eating an endangered species? Is the elephant you are planning to ride being treated well?
Plan any trips that may involve wildlife a long way ahead – research any encounters carefully to ensure the animals are treated fairly. Some operators invest back into breeding programmes and are dedicated to keeping the environment safe and enjoyable for all concerned, others are less so.
Never buy trinkets or items that have been made from rare animals – they have often paid the ultimate price and are only still for sale because people will buy them. If the demand dries up, then there will be little reason for poachers and unscrupulous vendors to continue their harm.
If you have spare time and energy, you may even find that you can volunteer your time abroad, and turn a holiday into a ‘help-aday,’ be it with animals or people.
Leave no trace
Whether you are camping in the wilderness or enjoying a five star getaway, remember to take all your rubbish and belongings with you, every time.
Take plenty of pictures and when you find somewhere beautiful, leave it just the way you found it.
