Tourism is one of the defining industries in New Zealand. Each year, tourists from at home and abroad explore the many delights and destinations on offer.
The reason New Zealand is such a sought-after destination is our incredible variety of natural attractions, from scenery to wildlife. To that end, eco-tourism is vitally important.
It is critical that travellers are educated about the history and value of our environment, and enjoy it in a manner that preserves the integrity of the sites and ensures they will be pristine and complete for generations to come.
Why ecotourism?
The aim of all eco tourism in New Zealand is to reduce the negative impacts on the surrounding environment, and even try returning something back into the environment, for example, volunteer work.
A great deal of thought has gone into planning our tourist offerings so that benefits are maximised, both to the travellers and the environment.
How do you enjoy it?
Marine reserves and bird sanctuaries preserve the unique bird, fish and plant life we cherish. The premise of ‘take only photographs, leave only footprints’ is perfect when it comes to viewing wildlife. Development like glass bottomed boats, guided tours and volunteer camps have meant that our natural wonders are easily accessible, and well preserved.
Camping and touring is encouraged throughout New Zealand. Camp-sites are well maintained, and offered over many budgetary levels.
Our forests are full of well-designed tracks, suitable for anything from a leg-stretching stroll to a long distance tramp. Thanks to our natural habitat and strong bio-security procedures, as a country we are relatively free from poisonous or threatening predators, so exploring the wilderness is fairly safe.
New Zealand’s ecosystem is extremely varied – tourists can ski on water or snow, enjoy picturesque beaches, walk, run, cycle or jump along, off, under or through a myriad of natural wonders.
We largely attract tourists who appreciate and treat our beautiful country well. Some tours are designed specifically to clean up beaches, plant trees or care for wildlife. It creates a cycle of funding, care and awareness that is vital to the survival of the industry.
It is simple to enjoy ecotourism, and many of us do it without a second thought, every time we walk through a park, or along a beach.
New Zealand sets the standard in sustainable ecotourism. Make sure you take time to enjoy our own home grown treasures, then take the plunge and explore further fields. It will do wonders for your heart, soul and health!
