Check The Local Conditions

The weather can make or break a good holiday. While we can cross our fingers and toes and hope for the best, there are a few things that are within your control when it comes to Mother Nature.

It is important to know about the local conditions before you book a trip – are you going to an area famous for seasonal rain or unusual weather events? Sometimes those deals that seem to good to be true are scheduled for times when it’s harder to attract tourists. Find out what you are likely to expect before you sign on the dotted line!

Severe weather can be more of a dampener on holiday spirits than by just keeping you indoors – it can lead to missed connections, long delays or even cancellations. Travel insurance is always wise to protect your belongings, but in the case of ‘travel interruption’ (or delay cover due to weather), it can end up as not only helpful, but an actual godsend.  While your travel advisor can’t guarantee sunshine, they can provide cover for contingencies.

Doing in-depth research on the local conditions before you fly is essential. You can find comprehensive weather data online – compare your proposed travel dates with historical data to get a clear picture of the conditions you are likely to experience. Some blogs and travel forums have great information from locals and seasoned travellers.

Reach for your smartphone once you arrive – region-specific travel and weather apps will also provide vital information. It’s also safest to assume that you may encounter several seasons during your travels, so always pack something in case of wet, windy or cold weather. It saves hunting out umbrellas or warm clothing in the middle of a deluge! If your clothing can multi-task, then so much the better – parkas are both rain and wind-proof, some jackets and pants have arms and legs that zip on and off, which is idea for changeable conditions, and fabric technology means that warm clothing needn’t be bulky or heavy.

The other factors to consider will depend on your travel choices – are you likely to be driving in unfamiliar conditions (eg snow)? If so, check that your rental agreement covers extras like snow tyres, or have alternative transportation available. Small aircraft and boats are often prevented from travelling due to weather conditions, so leave plenty of time in between to meet connecting flights.

Remember to seek sound local advice, and never assume that the weather outside your window will remain that way all day. Some areas are incredibly changeable, so it is always best to be over, rather than under, prepared. Always have emergency numbers on hand in case you do find yourself stranded by the conditions and know where to find shelter.

As the Irish proverb goes, when it comes to holidays – may the wind always be at your back and may the sun shine warm upon your face…
