Today, I have experienced a wonderful adventure, sailing on the high seas.

I was on board Spirit of Adventure sailing out of Tauranga to fund raise for their “Spirit of Adventure Trust”. Tickets cost $55 for a half day sail.

Some 80 people boarded and after waiting for a container ship to enter the Port of Tauranga, we set sail. Volunteers helped crew pull ropes to hoist the sails.

I spoke with Sarah, who had completed one of the 10 day youth development voyages.  Sarah was back on board, as a volunteer, to help out for the day. Leadership skills were evident as she rounded up some willing helpers.

This is a great programme for teenagers to learn lifelong skills of team work, communication skills, confidence and leadership.

“Spirit of Adventure Trust” is the first tall ship operator in New Zealand, and currently only one of a handful worldwide, to be awarded Blue Flag status in recognition of exceptional environmental management.

We sailed some five nautical miles out to sea before returning to port. Sea conditions were ideal with a slight south westerly breeze around 19 knots.

It’s not every day that you get the opportunity to sail on the high seas on such a beautiful tall ship. You get a different perspective on life, while out at sea.

Spirit of Adventure offers public sailings in between their youth development voyages.
