We don’t need people to tell us that New Zealand is a stunner, but it sure feels good when one of the world’s top newspapers hails us as the “World’s Greatest Country”. And it’s not the first time. In fact, this is the fifth year in a row that the Land of the Long White Cloud has been crowned the winner.
Hand-picked by Telegraph readers, the countdown featured a roundup of 50 countries across the globe. From the Maldives to the USA, New Zealand ran circles around the competition. According to the Telegraph, it could be something to do with the fact that New Zealand shares plenty of similarities with the UK.
Yes, exotic countries and colourful cultures are captivating. But when it comes to favourite’s New Zealand strikes a perfect balance of familiarity and escapism. Sure, there are snow-capped peaks, bubbling thermal hot springs, rugged fjords and Lord of the Rings sets. But at the same time New Zealand treats Brits to friendly locals, Commonwealth roots and of course, some of the tastiest fish and chips you’ll ever sink your teeth into.
So what have we got to offer in 2018? Here’s a glimpse at the hottest new travel trends shaping the NZ tourism scene.
Mud, minerals and nightlights in Rotorua
According to the official New York Times countdown of “52 Places to Go in 2018”, Rotorua is a bucket list destination. Compiled from contributors across the globe, the list talks up the town’s mineral rich hot springs and vibrant Maori culture. It also introduces the new Mudtopia Festival and the mesmerising Redwoods Nightlights, an innovative experience designed by legendary furniture designer turned sustainability champion, David Trubridge.
Stargazing in the Hauraki Gulf
Love stargazing? Set in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, Great Barrier Island was just certified as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary destination. Dotted with off-the-grid campsites and scenic walking trails, it’s a fantastic destination for intrepid travellers. After a long day on the trails there’s nothing better than a soak in the sultry Kaitoke Hot Springs.
Discover Hope Springs
In 2016 the coastal town of Kaikoura experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The result was the creation of Hope Springs, a 100-metre stretch of bubbling pools set just off Whaler’s Bay. They’re best explored as part of a sea kayak tour, so grab a paddle and hit the water.
All out luxury
Prefer a luxurious experience? Sofitel just threw open the doors of its ultra-glamorous, newly refurbished Wellington property. There’s also plenty of hype surrounding the new QT Queenstown hotel. It’s the town’s first five-star property and promises alpine inspired décor, a chic apres ski scene and of course, knockout views of Lake Wakatipu.
Gearing up for the Antipodean Explorer
We recently published an article on the arrival of a luxury train spanning across New Zealand, which has captured the attention of tourism experts across the globe. Directed towards the luxury Chinese market, the Antipodean Explorer will whisk passengers from Auckland to Queensland over six glorious nights.
With so much to love, we’re not all that surprised that New Zealand was the Telegraph’s top pick. Round six here we come.
