Lake Taupo is about the same size as Singapore. It is a truly spectacular place to visit, with many activities, from enjoying the beauty of the outdoors for free, to joining organised tours and attractions.
Taupo is situated in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, so it is an ideal place to base yourself if you are travelling. Start by enjoying the lake lifestyle, then go bushwalking, soak in hot pools or go further afield to the snow nearby.
Taupo is equally beautiful to visit in the summer as in the winter – you can enjoy the outdoors in a different way during the summer months, it is an idyllic place to unwind.
Taupo is a tourist attraction, and as such is well set up for visitors. Start at the Visitor's Centre to plan your itinerary. All budgets can be catered for in the town – from free spirited backpackers, to the most discerning explorer.
Naturally beautiful
The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking and is easily enough to fill a weekend break. Take a walk along the Waikato River to watch the magnificent Huka Falls – 220,000 litres of water thunder over every second. From Taupo, you can walk the return trip in a couple of hours and it is suitable for most fitness levels.
Don't miss a soak in the Otumuheke Stream (hot river). The Waikato River Spa Park is free and you can walk to take a soak.
There are world-class golf courses and trout fishing expeditions to enjoy every day.
Taupo welcomes all comers. There are many restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from, good medical care and transport. The town centre is compact and easy to walk around. If you are travelling with children, Taupo is an ideal destination as there are parks and plenty of activities that children are welcome to participate in.
