If you are planning to visit Tauranga here is a list, in no particular order, of my favourite things to see and do:

1. A walk around Mauao (Mount Maunganui) the distinctive rhyolite dome which is remnant of ancient volcanic action. Access via the beach at Pilot Bay or Marine Parade.  There are a few options to walk to the summit. Allow an hour to go around or up Mauao.

Tips: Bring good walking shoes, water bottle and sunscreen.

2. Visit The Elms Historic Mission House and Gardens – built in 1847, the oldest European heritage site in the Bay of Plenty. Guides are in attendance between 2-4pm Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday  and public holidays. Cost $5 adults, children 50c.

Tip: Allow 2 hours to take in The Elms and gardens.

3. Check out beaches Surf at Mount Maunganui and sheltered waters at Pilot Bay. Popular beach areas patrolled over summer.

Tip: opportunities for beach walks all year round.

4. Mount hot pools – Located under Mauao these pools provide a perfect setting to view Mauao. Different pool temperatures and massage treatments available if pre-booked.

5. Classic Flyers Museum – located at 9 Jean Batten Drive, Mount Maunganui, close to the Tauranga airport, this plane museum offers plenty of history and opportunities to see planes up close. An adjacent Cafe provides a variety of food and drinks.
