If you’re planning to travel as a solo, some travel experiences are more suited than others. Whether you are into walks, exploring local markets or history, here are some experiences and solo travel destinations ideal for exploring for one.
1. Colour and chaos in India
There is something indisputably mystical about India. You could have your Eat, Pray, love moment, while soaking in the amazing colour and chaos of this incredibly vibrant country and reconnect with yourself. Gaze at the white Taj Mahal, go behind-the-scenes of Mumbai’s Bollywood film industry, jump on a rickshaw and ride through Old Delhi… It’s easy to see why India ranks so high as one of the favourite solo travel destinations.

2. Connect with the animal kingdom in Africa
Observe the power of a lion and absolute beauty of the African landscape when you join a safari. If you are thinking of a solo holiday, one of our biggest travel tips is to join a group tour in Africa. It’s the most lucrative and safe way to experience various safari parks. The perfect solo travel experiences are all about connecting with travellers & locals. GrownUps Holidays travel partner Trafalgar’s safari trips do just this. Meet a Maasai chief in Kenya, or keep your eyes on alert for the “Big 5” while travelling on a Tanzanian game drive.
3. Explore ancient Rome
If you love history, dive into the world of ancient Rome and you will forget you are travelling as a party of one. Take in the awe of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, learn about the Renaissance architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica, and stop into museum after museum. Did you know the halls of the Vatican Museums stretch for 7km? That’s a lot of history and information to take in.
4. Discover Australia’s East Coast
For most of us we have explored Australia big cities, but here is so much more. For solos its great the friendly locals speak your language so it’s easy to strike up conversations anywhere from the pub to the supermarket. Solo travellers can tick off Australia’s bucket list sights like the Great Barrier Reef and Sydney’s northern beaches. It really is a huge country and one of our best solo travel tips is to join a guided tour like GrownUps Holidays travel partner Trafalgar’s Australian Highlights trip.

5. Sling around Singapore
Singapore is more than just a stopover destination; it is an easy city for solo travellers. Explore Chinatown, Roam the Gardens by the Bay, and finish with a bowl of steaming laksa noodle soup at one of the city’s renowned hawker stalls. This type of eating is where you share rickety tables with locals, so you’ll never dine alone.
6. Experience Japan’s Culture
From the huge skyscrapers of Tokyo to the ancient Buddhist temples of Kyoto, Japan is a land of contrasts where you can travel to the past and the future. Perfect for solo travel, cool experiences might be meeting a Tea Master, learning how to make sushi or tasting okonomiyaki in Osaka.

I quite agree with Avede’s comments re the solo travelling. You pay for being a single traveller, it puts you off completely even thinking about going anywhere. As there are many people travelling by themselves these days, you would think hotels/motels etc would have a certain amount of rooms just for single people, even if they were smaller than the average.
