In these days of a high divorce rate, quick hookups and disposable relationships, a long an satisfying marriage is something of an inspiration and achievement.
Jeram and Ganga Ravji of Auckland have been married for nearly 81 years, seeing them named as this year’s longest married couple in New Zealand.
The couple will be celebrating their 81st wedding anniversary in two months, and both turn 100 in May and June respectively.
Nominations were made to Family First, who bestowed the title.
The Ravjis have six children, 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren all living in Auckland. Their last full family photo was 10 years ago at their 90th birthday celebrations, so they are looking forward to their prize, which includes a full family portrait.
The previous longest marriage nominated was a Christchurch couple who celebrated their 79th wedding anniversary before the husband died in 2013. The ‘record’ concept originated in the United States and a couple from California holds the all time record so far with 82 years of marriage.
Perhaps the Ravjis will break this record – we wish them all the best!
