If you have limited garden space, potted plants are an excellent option. You can move them to catch the sun, they don't require a huge amount of space and the pots themselves become a feature on your patio or windowsill.
Generally potted plants are easy to care for – read the instructions for each plant to determine how much care they need – some don't like direct sunlight, some need it, the same with water.
When you choose pots, select those that will have enough room for your plants to grow. It is a good idea to have a range of sizes – pots for herbs, flowers or small trees.
Time to upsize
When your plants are thriving, they need to be repotted from time to time. At the change of season, check the inside of the pot. If the roots are pushed hard up against it, it is probably time to repot.
Half fill the new pot with an appropriate potting mix (most have slow release fertilisers to feed the plants) and press it down gently. Then loosen the plant from it's original pot. Place the stem between your thumb and forefinger and spread your hand. Tilt the pot until you feel the plant loosen and slip out. Without delay, gently reposition it in its new pot and cover with additional potting mix and press fairly firmly.
Make sure that you water the plant well. Take care to disturb the roots as little as possible. Your plant should start to thrive again, given some extra space to move and grow in.
