The internet is here to stay
More and more, our world is going online – shopping, banking, news. It can be daunting trying to keep up with all the changes in technology, not to mention confusing! It is hard to know where to start keeping current. Rest assured, you are not alone. SeniorNet is here to help.
The beauty of the internet is that it is so easy to keep in touch with family and friends in far-off places, and to source products and information so easily.
Learn with friends
SeniorNet gives older adults an opportunity to get on the Internet, and learn more about new communication and information technology. It is run independently, but is based on a model created by a research project from the University of San Francisco. The project’s aim was to determine if computers and telecommunications could enhance the lives of older adults.
SeniorNet brings older adults and computers together in a friendly, fun and stress-free way. It’s for people over the age of 55 who’d like to learn more about computers. Participants learn real skills and develop confidence with anything from word-processing through to surfing the Net.
There are now 102 SeniorNet groups or learning centres throughout New Zealand. Each learning centre is established and run by an independent committee, who organise their own premises, classes and funding. Initially SeniorNet was brought to New Zealand in association with Telecom and the company still supports the venture.
