A jazz gig is about to get underway in 5 minutes. Backstage, the guitarist is speaking with the vocalist.
“Hey Lizz, the band is making a few changes to the opening number tonight. Firstly, we’re gonna do the first verse and chorus in a real slow lounge style; this will very suddenly speed up and change key, maybe up to A Major for verse two. Then halfway through the next chorus we are gonna make a shift to a kind of funky 3/4 time, until the middle 8 – which we are randomly going to turn into a middle 11. When we return to the head for the last section, we are gonna move back to the original key without any modulation shift and zap it back into a flat-out 4/4 swing, before we……”
“Hang on mate! There’s absolutely no way we are gonna do any of that with 5 minutes notice! We need to rehearse this kind of thing – what the hell are you on???”
“Whaddaya mean? You’ve been doing it this way all week!”
