We all like to feel good. As we age, we gain the experience to know our own personal style, yet most gals still wonder regularly, “What should I wear?”. Those four little words aren’t a lament, but a desire to arrive somewhere feeling comfortable, appropriate, and confident. It’s not about impressing others, but about making sure we’re presenting our best selves, in a way that feels right for us.
Of course, as trite as it sounds, the best thing to wear is always a smile. Any outfit looks better with one, and it’s the easiest accessory to put on!
That said, fashion is still fun to play with, and there are a few simple do’s and don’ts to help us feel fabulous no matter the occasion.
Do ask
If you’re invited to an event, whether it’s a casual lunch, a party, or another social gathering, it’s perfectly fine to inquire about the dress code. You can ask casually, “Will I be okay in jeans?” or add a bit of humour with something like, “Should I get my ball gown dry-cleaned?” Direct is good too: “Is there a dress code?” No need to guess when a quick question can ensure you feel comfortable and confident from the moment you walk in.
Do feel comfortable
Venues like movie theatres, planes, and hotels can often feel chilly, so always bring an extra layer just in case. A scarf not only adds colour and texture but keeps you warmer than an exposed neck. Comfort is key to looking and feeling your best.
Dress for yourself
Even if no one else will see you, make an effort each day. Some mums with young kids who struggle to find an occasion to dress up have created “Frock Up Fridays,” where no matter the week’s chaos, they put on a dress and heels just because. It’s a fun morale booster. Find your own reasons, whether it’s “Beautiful Book Club” or “Furs for Friday.”
Buy what’s comfortable
Don’t force yourself to follow trends if they don’t suit you. If the current waistline styles aren’t to your liking or a trending colour makes you feel less than fabulous, don’t wear it. Choose pieces that fit your body and your personal style.
Make sure your clothes fit well
If your weight has fluctuated recently, it might be time to reassess your wardrobe. Avoid squeezing into too-tight clothing or hiding in oversized pieces. Properly fitting clothes will flatter your body and boost your mood. Remember, good posture can transform how your clothes hang on you, and a comfortable pair of shoes will always be appreciated by your feet.
Don’t forget accessories
Accessories can make or break an outfit. A statement necklace, an elegant pair of earrings, or a chic handbag can elevate even the simplest ensemble. Don’t be afraid to experiment with bold colours or unique pieces to reflect your personality. Hats, for instance, are making a comeback, and they can add extra flair while providing practical sun protection. Sunglasses, belts, or a stylish watch are small details to help enhance your look and boost your confidence. Just remember to keep it balanced—choose one or two standout items rather than overloading on accessories.
Feel pretty all over
Don’t forget about what’s underneath! Well-fitting underwear can elevate an outfit, so invest in pieces that fit properly and replace them when needed. It’s the foundation of feeling good in whatever you wear.
And finally, never underestimate the power of perfume. A spritz of your favourite scent is the ultimate finishing touch to any outfit—it’s a little indulgence that lasts all day and makes you feel extra special.
