Hard to believe that 20 years has passed since Ange Marshall opened her first Briarwood store in Auckland. This much-loved Kiwi brand of stunning leather handbags, boots, shoes and wallets has gone from strength to strength and judging by Ange's enthusiasm for the new 2012 Summer collection, it shows no signs of growing old gracefully!
The 20th Anniversary marks a new direction for the company with a much broader shoe range and stunning new design developments in the handbags and wallets. The Briarwood story is a classic Kiwi 'can do' tale – young ambitious girl returns from London, a lifelong dream of creating her own fashion label fired up by years spent exploring Europe's most stylish cities. With just a few pounds in her pocket and plenty of passion and determination that dream was born.
"I didn't have much to begin with… but to this day, I still have the lined school pad with my hand-written 23 point business plan," says Briarwood founder, Ange Marshall.
Ange set up the first Briarwood store in 1992, in a very small space in Auckland's Newmarket shopping district.
A small launch collection of beautiful leather bags was created, with some of the finishing touches done on a sewing machine in a tiny back room the size of a cupboard.
By the end of the first week's trading New Zealand women's love affair with Briarwood had begun.
One of the highlights of Ange's career was winning a 'Woman to Watch' Award in the mid-nineties. But seeing other women wearing her product still brings the greatest sense of satisfaction.
"What I enjoy most about my job," says Ange "is designing simply beautiful pieces and then seeing other women wearing them. I get a kick out of knowing that other people love my products as much as I do!"

"At times it's been a real roller coaster of a ride, juggling the demands of a thriving business with raising two very active girls and managing one very energetic and busy husband! But I have loved every minute of it", Ange enthuses.
The increase of cheap mass-produced shoes flooding the shelves, combined with the tough economic climate has meant Ange is even more determined to uphold her exacting standards of exquisite quality and comfort, and exceptional customer service. Ange's attention to the finest detail has earned her a very loyal following.
