What a bloody silly idea to put into peoples heads. Hedgehogs do not swim they don’t even like water. In New Zealand hundreds of hedgehogs die because they fall into swimming pools and other waterways and they do not instinctivly curl up into a ball and lie on their backs. Their defence is to curl up into a ball so that their belly and soft bodyparts are underneath and their spines protect them from injury .
