prideSometimes the most unlikely alliances form the strongest friendships. In 1984, a group of striking miners from a small Welsh mining community and a group of gay and lesbian urban activists would not ordinarily meet, let alone form a wring partnership.

However, truth sometimes being stranger than fiction, that is the basis of the new film, Pride.

The miners from Dulais were struggling to make ends meet, while they were out on strike, and their plight reached the activists in London. In the 80’s gay and lesbian groups faced discrimination and marginalisation on a regular basis. In a gesture of selflessness and support, the activists formed a groups called LGSM – Lesbians and Gays Suport the Miners, and approached the Minerworkers Union to offer their support.

Initially, members of the union were unwilling to accept support and a generous donation from such an unlikely source, which could have stopped this remarkable story in its tracks.

Such was their belief that they could make a difference, the LGSM group travelled to Dulais. Continued scepticism followed, but a few key members of the Welsh community, including local leader Dai and village matriarch Hefina opened their minds and hearts and ultimately helped break down barriers and forge an extraordinary bond between two very different groups of people, with more in common than they could ever have imagined.

As a film, Pride paints a portrait of how people fight for their place in society, and how change occurs when we open our minds to new possibilities. In the spirit of other English film classics such as The Full Monty and Billy Elliot, Pride will inspire, amuse and entertain you.

PRIDE IS IN CINEMAS NATIONWIDE FROM OCTOBER 16, 2014.
