Fun Fact #1
The Southern Pole of Inaccessibility is the point on the Antarctic continent most distant from the Southern Ocean. It is far more remote and difficult to reach than the geographic South Pole.
On 14 December 1958 a Soviet Antarctic Expedition established a temporary station at this location. A second Russian team returned there in 1967.
Today, a building still remains at this location with a golden visitors' book inside for visitors to sign!
Fun Fact #2
It turns out eye patches were not just an evil-looking accessory, they were helpful for living the sea life as well. Pirates wore eye patches to keep one eye accustomed to the darkness below deck.
As the sunlight on the ocean is magnified, a sailor could take a few minutes to adjust to the darkness below deck. With an eye patch, all they needed to do was switch the cover over to the other eye, allowing them to see with the eye that had already become accustomed to the dark.
Sailors of all kinds used the eyepatch for this function.
