Decorating your home for Christmas is the best way to get into the Christmas spirit. Create your own festive wonderland and make your home the hub of the Christmas season.
Traditions are important
Christmas has a huge history of tradition. You may have decorations that have been passed down through the family – make sure they have pride of place, and as you set them up, take a moment to appreciate the place they memories they evoke.
Everyday Christmas
Not all Christmas decorations need to involve tinsel and angels. Replace candles in your candleabras with red, silver or gold, and make sure you have some festive (or appropriately coloured) tea towels and napkins to use in December. Fill the base of glass vases with red marbles and then add flowers over the top for a festive effect.
Fairy lights look equally gorgeous inside as out, and create a wonderful atmosphere.
Bake your decorations
If you have children or grandchildren in your home – why not make Christmas cookies, ice them, wrap them in cellophane and hang them on the tree?
Christmas baking and preserves under glass bells on a cake plate look fantastic on a bench or sideboard ('tis also the season for a wee bit of indulgence!). If you have to replace your decorations a couple of times, then that's part of the fun.
A family affair
Make a date with your family to decorate your home. Put on some music, break out the Christmas nibbles and make an occasion of it. Give small children their own assortment of decorations for their bedrooms so they are involved – even winding tinsel along their bedhead will help them get in the spirit.
